Silver Pagoda
Situated to the south of the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, officially known as Wat Ubaosoth Ratanaram, translates to ‘The Temple of the Emerald Crystal of Buddha.’ This remarkable structure was originally built as a wooden edifice under the reign of King Norodom in 1892. However, in 1962, it underwent significant reconstruction using reinforced concrete, a project overseen by Somdach Norodom Sihanouk, the son of King Norodom.
The Silver Pagoda endured considerable damage during the Khmer Rouge regime, a period marked by turmoil and destruction in Cambodia. Following the end of the Pol Pot era, the pagoda was meticulously restored to its former glory, reflecting both the resilience of the Cambodian people and the importance of preserving their cultural heritage. Today, the Silver Pagoda stands as a symbol of national pride and spiritual significance, housing numerous treasures, including a stunning collection of Buddha statues made from various materials, including gold, silver, and crystal. Visitors to the Silver Pagoda can appreciate not only its architectural beauty but also its deep historical and cultural context within Cambodia.
